The Gesellschaftshaus am Klosterbergegarten is an event building built according to plans by Karl Friedrich Schinkel in Magdeburg on the edge of the Klosterbergegarten . It is u. a. Headquarters of the Center for Telemann Care and Research .

In 1824 the city of Magdeburg bought the grounds of the Berge monastery. The design of the Volksgarten was done by Peter Joseph Lenné. Karl Friedrich Schinkel drew up the design of a society house, which was completed four years later according to plans by Magdeburg's city architect Friedrich Wilhelm Wolff . An extension was built in 1896.

Until the Second World War , the Gesellschaftshaus was one of the most sociable places in Magdeburg. From 1950 to 1990 it served as the house of the pioneers , and numerous working groups had their headquarters here.

After the fall of the Wall, the building was completely renovated, with which all parts of the building were brought closer to the respective state of construction and at the same time current needs were taken into account. In 2005 the building was reopened.

Structural design

The part that goes back to Schinkel is classicist . The building has two floors. In the upper one there are two large halls, the Schinkelsaal and the Gartensaal. Both halls are preceded by terraces with stairs leading to the monastery garden.

In addition, the building has a representative staircase and several salons. Service rooms such as cloakrooms and toilets are located on the ground floor.

Todays use

The halls are used for chamber concerts, readings and theater performances. The Gesellschaftshaus is the seat of the Center for Telemann Care and Research, which is dedicated to researching the life and work of the famous Magdeburg composer Georg Philipp Telemann , but also to the music history of Magdeburg and the region.
