Billy Ocean recorded the song with Robert John Lange for Ocean's album Tear Down These Walls in 1987 . Synthesizers, drum machines and saxophones were used. The song mixes synthpop - soul with R&B influences.

The song became Ocean's third number one hit of his career in the United States . It was on the American charts for a total of 19 weeks. Likewise, the song became a number one hit in Australia , the Netherlands , Ireland , Norway and Canada . In Ocean's British homeland, however, the song only reached number three in the charts. In Germany , the song also reached number three and stayed in the charts for 18 weeks. At the same time of publication, the song was also featured in the film License to Drive and in the soundtrack to the film.

There were also instrumental pieces of the song as well as various extended versions, some of which are over eight minutes in length.
