The grain unit ( abbreviation : GE ) is used to calculate the production of a farm or agriculture in an area. 1 GE corresponds to 100 kg of barley.

The use of GE enables individual products to be combined into a total value. The animal products are not evaluated according to their own energy content, but according to the energy content of the feed that is required on average for production. One decitonne ( dt ) feed barley corresponds to 1.00 GE. All other plant or animal products are converted into GE according to a specified key (see table for examples).
