The water body type of the year was proclaimed in Germany for the first time in 2011 by the Federal Environment Agency for one year in order to raise awareness among the general public for the ecological importance of water bodies and the need to protect them. The award should take place every year on World Water Day . The selection is made from the types defined by the Water Framework Directive for coastal waters , rivers and lakes . In 2011, the selection was based on the particular frequency of this type.
