The Giardino Perego ( German  about: Perego Garden ) is a public park in Milan between the old town and the central train station .

history

The park was laid out in 1778 by the wealthy Perego family, who had their property in Via Borgonuovo 14 with the Palazzo Perego di Cremnago . The property of the building borders on the southern tip of the park, so had direct access to it. Previously it was part of the cloister garden of the dissolved Sant'Erasmo monastery, a large part of which is now built over. The draft goes on plans by Swiss architect and city planner Luigi Canonica back of him - knew with oval-shaped fish pond and perpendicular paths - the contemporary taste accordingly. At the beginning of the 19th century it was transformed into an English landscape garden by Luigi Villoresi . The neo-Gothic greenhouse and some lines of sight are from this time .

In the aftermath of the Movimento Italiano per l'Architettura Razionale of the architectural association Gruppo 7 , a powerful traffic axis was to be built around 1940 starting from the main station, which would have destroyed the park. The houses to the north of the park today are part of this plan, but the actual aisle through the park with the Via dei Giardini was built much smaller than originally planned. The city of Milan bought the garden from the family and opened it to the public as a park from 1941 onwards. The western part adjoins the former property on Via Borgonuovo 14 at the rear. The eastern part with the greenhouse, which the Via die Giardini separated, is much smaller.

The Park With an area of nearly 4200 m 2 has mature trees of maple , redbud , hornbeam , oak , horse chestnut , yew , magnolia and yew . A hackberry tree of large dimensions is considered particularly valuable . The park is surrounded by five- to six-story houses. After its redesign in 2005, there is a small playground, a circuit for joggers and some modern works of art. A statue by Grazioso Rusca (1757–1829) from the 18th century, erected by Perego and representing Vertunno, is still unchanged in its original location. All other sculptures in the garden at the time were removed by the Perego family before they were sold.
