During his studies Tomaschoff worked on representational paintings such as portraits or house facades. The facades of buildings that were designed, destroyed and redesigned by human hands, as well as washed out and transformed under the influence of nature, become a source of inspiration for his increasingly abstract images. From then on, Tomaschoff's paintings became more and more independent of what was actually seen. More and more they visualize inner landscapes, which are translated into color landscapes and associate a wealth of personal memories. The works, which are complex due to the multi-layered structure (see technology), make you think of cracked, crumbling facades; they are reminiscent of landscapes in which light refracts; they suggest the shapes of faces. In contrast to many contemporary artists, Tomaschoff uses titles for his work. “Everything and Nothing”, “Intimate Distance”, “Imperceptible” or “Furchen” are just a few examples of poetic titles that nonetheless allow the viewer an openness in viewing and interpreting his works.

technology

Gideon Tomaschoff primes his canvases in a way that guarantees that the colors flow and soak up. After the primer, the painter applies layer by layer of both transparent and non-transparent colors to the canvas. In a subsequent work process, the applied layers are partially removed, roughened and partially destroyed. The radical treatment of the surface exposes the layers of paint underneath. Together with the effects of natural or artificial light, a wealth of visual impressions is created.
