The Gilde van Vrijwillige Molenaars , in German The Guild of Voluntary Millers (GVM), is a community of interested people who have dedicated themselves to the preservation of the miller's trade , as it used to be in the historic mills . This means that most of the old mills in the Netherlands are maintained and kept in operation. The guild was founded in Amsterdam in 1972 and offers training.

history

Since the advent of steam, diesel and electric drives, the number of water- and wind-powered mills in the Netherlands has steadily decreased. Modernization and maintenance by the Association of Hollandsche Molen , founded in 1923, slowed the decline of wind-powered milling at the beginning of the 20th century. In the 1960s there was government support to maintain and restore the remaining mills. However, it was becoming increasingly difficult to operate these mills economically and the classic miller's trade threatened to die out due to a lack of knowledgeable staff. The historic mills also threatened to come to a standstill and abandonment. A group of people who were enthusiastic about these old windmills and their operation offered courses for people who were willing to continue operating these mills in their free time. So the old knowledge about the profession could be passed on. This initiative led to the founding of the Guild van Vrijwillige Molenaars in 1972 . By then 1,500 millers had already been trained. In 1975 a group split off and founded the Gild Fryske Mounders in Friesland .

organization

The Guild van Vrijwillig Molenaars is a national organization with headquarters in Amsterdam and twelve representations in the provinces. A magazine called Gildebrief is published every three months . In addition to training, the association also offers support for millers, such as insurance or health and safety matters. The area around the mills is also included. No buildings or trees should obstruct the supply of wind.

education

The training to become a miller is instructed by experienced millers, who instruct the participants in certain mills in the skills to operate a mill safely. The course usually runs for a year and takes place half a day. The new millers will then be checked by the Guild Vereniging De Hollandsche Molen. With this diploma you can work on all mills in the Netherlands. Even though this certification has no legal and official character, most windmills require this proof from their volunteers.

Since 1997 courses for water mills have also been offered.
