gimp
The gimp (from French guimpe ) or the gorl (from Latin cordula ) is a decorative cord or a narrow ribbon that is used as a trim or border on clothes, upholstery or textile decorations. The word has been attested since the middle of the 17th century.
The gimp contains an insert made of cotton or jute, which is tightly spun (wrapped) with a high-quality thread made of silk or metal threads. They used to be made by the trimmers on the gimp mill or thread mill. They could be further processed into braids and border decorations ( Gorlspitzen ) by making lace (Klöppelgorl, Gorlspitze), sewing (Sewing Gorl) or weaving (Stuhlgorl) . As an element of clothing fashion, the gimp has a more decorative character, in upholstery it is used to conceal seams and rows of nails .
