Giovanni Antonio Leoni

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Giovanni Antonio Leoni (* before 1600; † after 1651 in Rome ) was an Italian composer and violinist of the early Baroque.

Giovanni Antonio Leoni, about whose life little is known, enjoyed the protection of Cardinal Pallotta for a long period of time . Leoni composed the vocal and instrumental concerts that the cardinal ordered for the Church of Santa Maria di Loreto . In 1625 one of his motets was published in the collection Sacri affetti contesti da diversi eccellentissimi autori by Francesco Sammaruco , which also includes works by Girolamo Frescobaldi and Claudio Monteverdi .

Leoni had numerous students, his sonatas and symphonias were widely distributed as manuscripts, many of the copies contained inauthentic changes such as decorations, so Leoni had 31 of his solo violin sonatas "Sonate di voce sola Violino ... libro 1, op.3" 1652 in Rome print. It is the first publication devoted exclusively to this genre. Two of Leoni's earlier publications are considered lost.
