Summit Balz

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Summit balz , or hilltopping in English , describes the special behavior of some insects - for example some butterflies , beetles , dragonflies and skin or two-winged birds - to visit highlighted places in the area, primarily to find sexual partners. For this purpose, the males fly at certain times to certain exposed areas in the area, such as hill tops or mountain tops, and try to occupy an area as high up as possible and displace rivals. Females ready to mate then fly to such locations to look for males. This behavior can be observed especially in widely scattered animals or less common species and often makes it possible to meet, select and reproduce sexual partners.

Animals with a pronounced behavior to meet at the summit courtship are z. B. Swallowtail and Sail butterfly .

A special form of summit balz or hilltopping is the treetop balz or treetopping.
