The Girgentana goat originally comes from the Italian province of Agrigento ( Sicily ). The city of Agrigento was called Girgenti until 1929 , after which this breed of domestic goat is named. Their ancestry is unclear. A particularly noticeable feature are their - in contrast to most other domestic goat breeds - twisted horns, which can reach a length of 80 cm in the buck. This has given rise to speculations that the Girgentana breed comes from the Central Asian screw goat ( Capra falconeri ). Their horns are spiraled outwards, while the Girgentana goat has an inward turn.
The number of pure-bred animals of this resilient and undemanding domestic goat breed had already declined sharply even in Italy by the end of the 20th century. The reason for this was the low milk yield compared to more modern breeds . Today, the populations have recovered due to the interest of zoos and organizations to conserve agricultural biodiversity . The Girgentana goat is used in landscape maintenance to preserve the cultural landscape .
