The company Girolamo Luxardo is an Italian producer of spirits from Torreglia in Padua . The company originally comes from the former Austrian, later Italian and now Croatian city of Zadar (Zara). It is best known for its maraschino .

history

The company was founded in 1821 in Zadar ( Zara ), a port city on the Dalmatian coast. Zara became the capital of the Kingdom of Dalmatia in 1797, then an Austrian crown land. Girolamo Luxardo from Genoa was sent to Zadar in 1817 as consul of the Kingdom of Sardinia . His wife Maria Canevari dealt with regional cuisine and distilled liqueur from Marasca cherries in the local style . This "Rosolio maraschino" was also often made in monasteries. She produced liquor of such quality that it caught the attention not only of family and friends, but also of connoisseurs . Her husband Girolamo founded a distillery in 1821 to produce maraschino . After eight years of research and completion of the product, he received an exclusive Imperial and Royal privilege from the Austrian emperor. The company, which today still bears the title of “Privilegiata Fabbrica Maraschino Excelsior” from that time, has participated in several exhibitions and has received several awards for its products. Luxardo was finally appointed purveyor to the imperial court , also purveyor to the royal Italian court.

In 1913, Michelangelo Luxardo, in the third generation, set up what was then a very modern distillery, one of the largest in Austria-Hungary. The representative building of the main administration and seat of the family directly on the port promenade of Zara can be visited to this day and is a landmark of the city.

After the end of the First World War and the collapse of the dual monarchy, Zadar became part of the Kingdom of Italy. Luxardo became one of the most important distilleries in all of Italy and was a supplier for the Italian court there. The Second World War hit the company hard. Zadar was increasingly exposed to the Allied bombing in 1943/44, the city was largely destroyed, including the distillery. With the victory of the partisans under Tito, the Italian population was forcibly expelled. Piero and Nicolò Luxardo, together with his wife Bianca, were killed and the company seemed to be coming to an end.

Giorgio Luxardo was the only fourth generation brother who survived. In his new home, Veneto, he built a new plant near Torreglia (province of Padua) together with Nicolò Luxardo from the fifth generation. The company is still in the family's sixth generation.

The family members in the company are Piero Luxardo (president and sales manager for the domestic market), Franco Luxardo (export manager), Guido Luxardo (general manager), Matteo Luxardo (junior manager of the export department), Filippo Luxardo (marketing Italy) and Giorgio Luxardo (procurement and IT Manager).

The Luxardo family sells their liqueur under the name "Luxardo Maraschino", while the old distillery in Zadar continues to produce and advertise under the name "Maraska Original".

Products

The best-known product is still maraschino. Luxardo also produces liqueurs such as Sambuca , Amaretto , Grappa , Limoncello and Passione Nera . In addition, material for bakers and ice cream manufacturers such as fruit syrup and maraschino cherries is supplied .
