Gitti Hentschel (born 1950 in Essen ) is a German communication scientist , social pedagogue , publicist , lecturer and feminist . She was a co-founder of the taz , co-publisher of the weekly newspaper Der Freitag and co-initiator of the German Women's Security Council. She headed the Gunda Werner Institute of the Heinrich Böll Foundation until 2015 . Her main focus is on peace and security policy from a gender perspective, strategies against (sexualized) violence, empowerment strategies for women, women and the media, intercultural communication, web communication and feminist perspectives on it.

Life

Gitti Hentschel grew up in a middle-class family in Essen. She was raised Catholic and attended a Catholic girls' school. After graduating from high school, she first studied journalism, sociology and psychology in Münster. After two semesters, she moved to Berlin in 1970, where she began to be politically active in the left-wing scene.

In 1979 she co-founded the taz , worked in the editorial department until 1985 and was a member of the board. As a court reporter, she wrote about sexual violence against children and women and took a position against pedosexual demands for the protection of minors to be lifted. Together with other taz editors, she called for a quota for women (52 percent of the positions for women) and a right of veto for texts and images that depict female sexuality.

From 1990 to 1995 Gitti Hentschel was the first women's representative at the Alice Salomon University in Berlin . She was also the national spokeswoman for the university women’s representative.

After working for the taz, she worked as a freelance journalist and was a co-publisher of the weekly newspaper Freitag . From 2000 to 2010 she was an honorary director of the 4th Berlin women's shelter. Since 2000 she has also headed the Feminist Institute in the Heinrich Böll Foundation, which has been called the Gunda Werner Institute since June 2007. In 2015 she handed over the management (since 2007 together with Henning von Bargen ) to her successor Ines Kappert . Gitti Hentschel works as a lecturer at the TU and HU Berlin, among others.
