The Glühwächter (also preheat monitor ) is a technical device for starting a diesel vehicle .

Since the early years of diesel technology, it was necessary to pre-glow a diesel engine . In the 1950s to 1980s, the pre-glow monitor (glow watcher) monitored this process. This construction was a wire through which electricity flowed. As soon as the preheating temperature of 1000 ° C was reached, the wire glowed dark red and signaled to the driver that he could now initiate the starting process. In modern diesel vehicles, a control lamp provides information about the status of the preheating. As soon as the control lamp goes out, the diesel engine can be started.
