Gladstone in 2017

Gladstone (born approx. November 2014) is a shorthair domestic cat who resides in the British Treasury Department HM Treasury in Whitehall . In June 2016 she was named "Chief Mouser of HM Treasury" (roughly: "Supreme Mouse Hunter of Her Majesty's Treasury"), a title similar to the Chief Mouser to the Cabinet Office .

Life

Gladstone was a stray tomcat who was picked up in London in May 2016 and taken to the Battersea Dogs & Cats Home , where he was named "Timmy". The idea of officially appointing a cat as "Chief Mouser", as is already the case at 10 Downing Street and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office , came from John Kingman, a former senior secretary of the Department. In June Timmy joined the Ministry and was renamed "Gladstone". It is named after the four-time British Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone .

Although he had lived in the building since the end of June, his official appointment was not made until July 29, 2016. The result of the EU membership referendum in the UK in June 2016 delayed the press release. Initially housed in an office, Gladstone is allowed to move freely around the property after an introductory phase. Board and lodging are partly taken over by the employees of the ministry.
