A glass balloon , called Demijohn in Rhineland-Hesse, is a corruption of the French dame-jeanne , in Northern Germany also Demion , is a glass container that is mostly used in the beverage industry. The word may derive from the Persian Damaghan .

shape

Glass balloons are available in sizes from 5 to 54 liters. The fragile glass body is protected from damage by a wooden crate or a wicker basket , and more recently also a plastic basket . It has a predominantly round shape and a narrow neck that is closed by a cork , fermentation lock or a rubber cap. The glass balloon can also be equipped with a drain cock (hose drain) for more convenient emptying, this outlet opening is difficult to clean and therefore more difficult to handle hygienically.

Below the "neck" and "shoulder", glass bottles have a predominantly cylindrical shape, while glass balloons tend to approximate the shape of a sphere. This optimizes the capacity in relation to the weight of the container. Due to the indentation below the "equator", the bottom surface is only about half the diameter of the bottle's belly. Together with a slight inward curvature, this makes the floor stable against breaking through when the balloon is put on when it is set down.

Usage

Glass balloons are used in fruit wine making at home . In wineries , these large vessels are used to store sweet reserves (clear, sterile wine must). Often, brandy distillates also mature in glass balloons. The glass balloon is often used in vinegar, wine and distillate stores for the purchase of loose goods, as the color of the contents comes into its own in clear glass balloons.

In Italy, the damigiana is measured in such a way that a family can keep a supply of wine in it for about a month. Jacketed containers with smaller contents are called Fiasco there .

Before the introduction of plastic vessels - also blown into a hollow shape - technical liquids, especially acids and solvents , were also delivered in glass balloons.
