Glengarriff ( Irish An Gleann Garbh , "the rough valley") is a place with about 800 inhabitants in the southwestern area of County Cork in Ireland , which is known as a tourist resort.

geography

Glengarriff is 20 km northwest of Bantry , and 30 km east of Castletownbere . Recently, its importance as a waypoint along Castletownbere to the Cork fish delivery route has deteriorated as local infrastructure has improved and vehicle traffic can now travel at significant speeds on the once rural thoroughfare.

economy

The economy is determined by tourism, subsistence farming and local services.

Glengarriff lies on a sheltered bay and is surrounded by high mountains. Noteworthy among the local attractions is the Ilnacullin garden island . The old round Martello Tower , which was built to defend against a threatened incursion by Napoleon's troops, provides a comprehensive view of the surrounding area. The nearby state forest contains some of the oldest oak and birch trees that still exist in Ireland. A short but steep path leads up to Lady Bantry's Overlook, which overlooks the western Cork area and Bantry Bay.

There are plenty of walking paths in the area, and live music is often available in the evenings at local pubs , especially during the tourist season. Glengarriff has a variety of shops, art galleries, pubs and restaurants, among other things.

Sports

The Glengarriff Golf Club is a nine-hole golf course on the east side of the village. He is linked to actress Maureen O'Hara , who lived nearby. The Glengarriff Conservation Area has many well-marked walks to explore the oak forests, waterways and mountains.
