Global Earth Observation System of Systems

The Global Earth Observation System of Systems ( GEOSS ) is an initiative of the Group on Earth Observations  (GEO) for earth observation within the framework of the Global Earth Observing System of Systems (also GEOSS) program.

tasks

It is the goal of GEOSS to serve the well-being of people and the environment:

  • Reduce losses in disasters
  • Research into the environmental factors that can affect human health
  • Improving the use of the available energy
  • Research into climate development
  • Research into the water cycle and improving the use of water
  • Improvement of weather observation and forecast
  • Research into and protection of ecosystems on land, on coasts and in seas
  • Observation and protection of biodiversity

Holdings

  • In Germany, various ministries are involved with D-GEO . There is a separate GEO secretariat.
  • Austria is also involved, the project is supervised by ZAMG (GEO secretariat).
  • The European Commission complements GEOSS with the European programs Kopernikus and INSPIRE .
