Global Forum on Migration and Development

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) (German name: Global Forum for Migration and Development) is an initiative initiated by the member states of the United Nations to address the links between migration and development in a practical and action-oriented way. It is an informal, non-binding, voluntary and government-led process that is the culmination of more than a decade of international dialogue on the growing importance of the links between migration and development. It reflects the gradual recognition of the limits of a strictly national approach to migration issues and their implications at the global level in an intergovernmental framework.

The global forum for migration and development worked out the consensus for the global compact for a safe, orderly and regular migration in several meetings .

Involvement of civil society and business

Given the societal implications of these issues, civil society representatives have been involved in this process from the outset. GFMD economic participation was advocated at the GFMD summit 2015 in Istanbul, this brings a perspective from the economy to the forum. There is a mutual interest between governments, the private sector and civil society in promoting more transparent, more effective and more humane migration policies that take into account labor market needs. The International Organization of Employers (IOE) and the World Economic Forum's Global Future Council on Migration coordinate the work of the GFMD business mechanism. Together they form the Business Advisory Group. The "GFMD Business Mechanism" is located at the IOE in Geneva.
