Globes (unit)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The globes , clusters or tufts, were a piece of the trade in flax in the Hessian Grand Duchy of Fulda . The notions of measure were known as early as 1603 and were no longer in use around 1860/70. In other regions of Germany, such as the Saxon and Westphalian regions, the designation Risse or Riste was common.

  • 1 flax globes = 15 chews, chews, knocks (also twisted into edges ) = 90 hands full = 12 to 15 chews / bundles of flax (a larger number possible)

The connection: A Riste, also Reiste in the Hessian dialect, the back of the hand, was a tuft of flax. Five (also six or seven) Ristel (handful) resulted in a chew.

  • 1 globes = 66 travelers = 264 handfuls (broken and hacked flax)
