Goal Structuring Notation

The Goal Structuring Notation ( GSN , for example: Goal Structuring Notation ) is a graphical notation to provide evidence and document that the safety goals of a system have been achieved. The evidence is presented in the form of a diagram, which builds up its safety evidence in the shape of a tree .

Originally developed at the University of York in the 1990s, it gained popularity in 2012 and was initially used to track safety guarantees in industries such as traffic management and nuclear power. In 2014 it became the standard format for the graphic documentation of safety evidence and is also used in patent claims, discussion strategies and legal arguments.
