Goanna is an Australian band that combines social protest with popular music.

Surname

The band was founded by Shane Howard in 1970 as The Goanna Band . The name was kept until 1979 when it was changed to Goanna . Goanna is the name for a type of monitor lizard that live in Australia and Tasmania .

The band produced Spirit of Place , which was voted Best Album of 1982 by the Australian Music Industry ( ARIA ); Solid Rock was voted best single of the year. Solid Rock deals with the expulsion of the Aborigines by the Europeans. The song was marketed worldwide. In the dispute between the environmental movement over the Franklin Dam and the Tasmanian government, they recorded the song Let the Franklin Flow . It became the protest song of this movement and reached number 12 on the Australian charts. They also released the song Sorry , a song about the stolen generation of Aboriginal children.

The band performed three songs ( Common Ground , Song for Africa , Solid Rock ) at the Sydney Sports & Entertainement Center in 1985 at the Oz for Africa concert as part of the worldwide Live Aid concerts. Their last album Oceania was released in April 1985. This album came to number 20 on the Australian charts in May 1985. In 2006, numerous songs by the Goanna band were played on the radio station Triple M in a contest and they achieved good placements there. The band Goanna is known all over Australia.
