Oz for Africa

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Oz for Africa was a concert that took place on July 12, 1985 as part of the Worldwide Live Aid Concerts at the Sydney Sports & Entertainement Center . This concert represented the Australian contribution to Live Aid . Due to the time difference, this concert started twelve hours before the one in London and was therefore also the first Live Aid concert.

The concert, organized by furniture dealer Bill Gordon and music producer Brian de Courcy , in collaboration with Bob Geldof and the Band Aid Trust , was moderated by Ian Molly Meldrum . Organizer Bill Gordon even sold his furniture business and used the money to support the concert.

The four-hour concert was broadcast on two Australian television channels, Channel 7 and Channel 9. Parts of it were also shown during the worldwide broadcast of Live Aid and are also included on the Live Aid DVD .

Approximately 11,000 viewers paid $ 18.50 each to watch Oz for Africa. The concert grossed six million US dollars for Africa.

Australia and Live 8

After it became known that Bob Geldof was planning a new edition or continuation of Live Aid with Live 8 , the Australian music producer Ian Molly Meldrum , who had already worked closely with Bob Geldof on Live Aid in 1985 and led Oz for Africa , tried in the course of the worldwide Live 8 concerts , including a Live 8 concert in Australia . Quote: " I hope he (Geldof) will do it, we definitely have the musicians " (" I'm hoping he'll do it, we've certainly got the acts. ").

After his efforts to find an Australian version of Live8 remained fruitless, Molly Meldrum hosted a so-called pre-show for Live 8 on Australian television together with ex- Savage Garden front man Darren Hayes .
