Goethe monument

The Goethe Memorial in Darmstadt was donated in 1903 by the Darmstadt Journalists and Writers Association.

The sculptor Ludwig Habich , who was then active in the Darmstadt artists' colony , created the bronze sculpture of a naked youth for the monument, which stands on a pedestal adorned with portraits of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe , Johann Heinrich Merck and Maria Karoline Flachsland . The surrounding temple-like architecture was designed by the architect and government master builder Adolf Zeller (1871–1945).

The young man's figure designed by Habich was thoroughly cleaned and overhauled in 2014 after an attempted theft. It was then placed back on the memorial in April 2015.
