The Gola Forest National Park ( English Gola Forest National Park ), formerly Lofa-Mano , is a national park in Liberia . It is located in the west of the country and borders the Gola Rainforest National Park in neighboring Sierra Leone .

The nature reserve was proclaimed under its current name in 2016 and covers an area of 979.75 square kilometers . It is considered to be one of the most important forest reserves in West Africa and one of the last untouched primary forests in Africa. As part of the Guinea forest of West Africa , the national park is one of the world's biodiversity hotspots .

The establishment of the cross-border park with Sierra Leone is planned. This is (as of May 2017) in the project phase under the Across the River - a Transboundary Peace Park for Sierra Leone and Liberia Project .

fauna and Flora

Nile pike , such as Brienomyrus brachyistius and Brienomyrus longianalis, live in the rivers . In the typical tropical rainforest there are said to be monkeys (including chimpanzees ) , pygmy hippos , bushbucks , bongos and the threatened zebra suckers . Little is known about the forest elephant population there ; In 1980 there should have been only about 150 animals. They can only survive if they have enough habitat for tropical woods despite the exploitation of the rainforest .
