Goldthwaite , founded in 1885, is a small town with 1,802 residents (2002) and the administrative seat of Mills County , Texas .

Goldthwaite is located in the western part of the Texas hill country at around 474 meters above sea level. The city is on United States Highways 84 and 183 and Texas State Highway 16. The city is also a stop for the Burlington Santa Fe railroad company .

Goldthwaite, like many other cities in Texas, was named after a railroad worker: Joe C. Goldthwaite of the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway . The post office opened in 1886, the first prison in 1888 and the courthouse in 1890.
