Gongkwon Yusul

Gongkwon Yusul ( 공권 유술 ) is a modern South Korean martial art and was founded in 1996 by Kang Jun. "Gongkwon" means "empty (unarmed) fist" and symbolizes hard methods, such as knocks, blows and kicks. "Yusul" describes the "gentle art" and stands for the yielding methods such as throws, articulated levers and ground fighting techniques that divert the opponent's strength. The system includes all perspectives of unarmed combat (distance, contact and ground combat) and is characterized in particular by the organic-dynamic combination of the individual techniques.

Gongkwon Yusul's open and holistic combat system is reminiscent of modern full contact sports such as mixed martial arts and is also known as "Korean MMA". In contrast, Gongkwon Yusul, like traditional martial arts, is based on a philosophy with ethical principles, uniforms, terminologies and a hierarchy.

In South Korea , especially in the region around Seoul , several dojangs already existed shortly after it was founded in 1996 . Since the founding of the German headquarters for Gongkwon Yusul in Münster in 2010, the martial art is also in Germany . There are also schools and other training opportunities outside of South Korea in Spain , the Netherlands, the USA , Canada , Tunisia , Australia , Vietnam and Hong Kong .

techniques

Gongkwon Yusul comprises a large repertoire of techniques, which can be broken down as follows:

  • Striking and kicking techniques (Tagyeokgi)
  • Gentle techniques (Yusulgi) such as throws, articulated lever techniques and ground fighting techniques
  • Distance exercises with a partner (matdaegi). The individual basic techniques are trained in pairs from a certain distance.
  • Combination exercises (Samwonbon) . The individual basic techniques are fluently combined with one another and trained in pairs.
