Google Meet is a video communication service developed by Google.

It is one of two services that will replace the previous version of Google Hangouts , the other is Google Chat .

After an invitation-only and quietly released iOS app in February 2017, Google Meet officially launched in March 2017. The service was presented as a video conferencing app for up to 30 participants, which was described as a business-friendly version of Hangouts. At the start it had a web application, an Android application and an iOS application.

On April 29, 2020, Google announced that it would make Google Meet available for free to all users from May onwards. In the free version, video conferences are to be limited to a length of 60 minutes from September 2020 - on the assumption that the increased need for video meetings due to the coronavirus pandemic will then have decreased. From January 2020 to April there was a thirty-fold increase in the daily use of Meet. In March, there were three billion minutes of video conferencing every day through Meet, adding three million new users every day. At the end of April, the number of daily video conference participants exceeded the 100 million mark.

The functions include:

  • Up to 16 participants per call with a picture and up to 100 participants without a picture for users of the free version, up to 150 for users of G Suite Business and up to 250 for users of G Suite Enterprise
  • Ability to join meetings on the web or through the Android or iOS app
  • Ability to call meetings with a dial-in number
  • Password-protected dial-in numbers for G Suite Enterprise Edition users
  • Integration with Google Calendar for one-click meeting calls
  • Screen sharing for presenting documents, spreadsheets or presentations
  • Encrypted calls between all users
  • AI-generated subtitling in real time
  • for free users, sessions (after September 2020) are limited to 60 minutes

All participants must have a Google account.

While Google Meet introduced the above features to update the original Hangouts application, some of the standard Hangouts features have been redesigned, including the ability to view attendees and chat at the same time.

Google Meet is a standards-based video conferencing application that uses proprietary protocols for video, audio, and data transcoding. Google has partnered with Pexip to ensure interoperability between the Google protocol and the standards-based SIP / H.323 protocols and to enable communication between Meet and other video conferencing equipment and software.
