Gotarzes II († 51 ) was a Parthian king who ruled from 40 to 51 AD. He succeeded Artabanos II on the throne, to which he was apparently not related. He led the government together with his brother Vardanes , who tried to oust Gotarzes II from the rule early on. Around 40 AD, however, an agreement was reached and the brothers divided the Parthian Empire, with Gotarzes II receiving mainly the northern provinces. However, there were again disputes between the two brothers, from which Gotarzes II emerged victorious. Vardanes was murdered. Gotarzes II then had to fight another anti-king: Meherdates . He was finally able to defeat this, but did not kill him, but had his ears cut off. The event was celebrated on a rock relief in Behistun . Gotarzes II died in 51.
