from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Gotha was a British cargo ship that was sunk in the Mediterranean by a German submarine during the First World War , now under the Italian flag and under a new name .

The ship

The Gotha was built in 1888 by Earles Shipbuilding & Engineering Co. (C. & W. Earle) in Hull with hull number 310 for the Yorkshire Coal & Steam Shipping Co. in Goole ; the steam engine also came from the company. The ship was 67.2 m long and 8.9 m wide and measured 821 GRT .

fate

The ship was used to transport coal from the Yorkshire mines . The shipping company, and with it Gotha , was taken over by Goole Steam Shipping Co. in 1895. In 1899 the Aberdeen Steam Navigation Co. in Aberdeen ( Scotland ) bought the ship and renamed it Harlaw . In 1910 the Harlaw was sold to the Patriotic Steamship Co. in London, which went into liquidation in 1913/14 .

The ship finally came to the Italian state railway Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane in 1915 . On January 30, 1918, with a load of brown coal on the way from Marseille to La Spezia , the Harlaw was attacked about 30 nautical miles northwest of Corsica by the German submarine UB 48 under Oberleutnant zur See Wolfgang Steinbauer. After the crew went into the boats, the ship was sunk at position 43 ° 1 ′ 12 ″  N , 8 ° 18 ′ 0 ″  E by artillery fire.
