The Government House (literally translated government building ) in Melbourne is the official residence and official residence of the Governor of Victoria . It was also the official seat of the Governor General of Australia from 1901 to 1930 . It is in the neighborhood of the Royal Botanic Gardens .

Charles La Trobe , Governor of Victoria, acquired the land for what would later become the Government House in 1841, while Ferdinand von Mueller , Director of the Royal Botanic Gardens, built the entire site, including what would later become Government House, as a huge park in 1857. The seat of government itself was built from 1871 to 1876. Previously, the governors lived in Toorak House, just like La Trobe in La Trobe's Cottage. The architect was William Wardell.

From the creation of the Australian state in 1901 until Parliament moved to Canberra in 1927, the Australian Governor General used Government House as an official residence. Even after the Federal Parliament had moved to Canberra, the Governor General stayed in Government House for another three years. The Government House has been used continuously by the Governors of Victoria as the seat of government since 1934.
