Gráinne (first name)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gráinne is a female given name from Ireland .

The origin of the name is not clear, but it is believed that the name goes back to an ancient grain goddess (see also Granne ). The current spelling of the name is identical to the New Irish word gráinne for grain or grain. The name appears in Irish mythology in the form of Gráinne , the daughter of the legendary High King of Ireland Cormac mac Airt . A well-known historical figure who bears the name is the pirate queen Gráinne Ní Mháille , known by her English version of the name as Grace O'Malley . The various, anglicised forms of the name such as Granya, Grace, Gertrude or Gertie are merely phonetic references without any further connection. The name has experienced a renaissance in Ireland in the last few decades, so that it is a common sight in Irish public life today.
