The Grand Théâtre de Provence is a theater in Aix-en-Provence in the new Sextius Mirabeau district . An Aix symbol was used to design the rooms: on the outside, stones of different colors recall their origins in the Montagne Sainte-Victoire .

The building

The house was designed by the Italian architects Vittorio Gregotti and Paolo Colao as a venue for operas and concerts and is intended for the international Festival d'Aix-en-Provence , financed by the Pays d'Aix community. It opened on June 29, 2007 with Richard Wagner's musical drama Die Walküre . The auditorium has 1,366 seats, 950 of which are on the ground floor.

Since its opening, it has been directed by Dominique Bluzet , performing dance theater, symphony concerts and chamber music. Since 2013 it has also provided the setting for the Aix-en-Provence Easter Festival, initiated by violinists Renaud Capuçon and Dominique Bluzet with the support of the Crédit Mutuel group .

The construction of the theater cushions undesirable vibrations from the nearby railway line.

In December 2007, the Grand Théâtre de Provence hosted ("residence") the Orchester français des jeunes (French Youth Orchestra).
