Grannis Island is an uninhabited island on the Quinnipiac River in New Haven , Connecticut . It is owned by the New Haven Land Trust as part of the Quinnipiac Meadows Nature Preserve .
geography
The island is located in an eastern curve of the river directly on the urban area of New Haven. On the opposite bank is the residential area of Fair Haven with Dover Beach a little further upstream. There extending Interstate 91 . To the north there is a commercial center with a large Walmart and Lowe's and to the east the residential areas of Fair Haven Heights . The Northeast Corridor encloses the area in a semicircle to the north.
history
The island was inhabited by Quinnipiac Indians until very recently. Archaeological digs have unearthed dog burials, mittens and fire pits, as well as other signs of human habitation.
