Grattler

The Grattler Opera , Theater Holzhausen

The term Grattler ( Gratler , Gradler , Graddler , Gradla , Kratler , Krattler or Kraddler ) was used in a condescending way, especially in Bavaria, to designate Tyroleans who moved to Bavaria with their families and a small cart full of fruit, etc.; derived from "Kratten" (two-wheeled wagon), which goes back to Kratte , Krattn , Kraxn (basket, wagon basket).

The expression is still used in dialect derogatory terms for financially weak groups of people, also for business that is operated unsuccessfully ("Grattlerwirtschaft") or anti-social behavior ("Des is a Grattler!"). Especially in the last-mentioned type of use, the scope of the swear word is very broad and difficult to define. Today the word (especially in Bavaria) also serves as a swear word in the sense of “bum” or “ anti-social ”. A caravan is also mockingly referred to as a "Grattlervilla".

The use of the word as a disparagement of the other person can have legal consequences as an insult.

The term should not be confused with the similar sounding word Grantler , which also comes from the Bavarian language .
