Graviera cheese from Crete

Graviera ( Greek Γραβιέρα ) is a hard cheese known throughout Greece and produced in many areas of the country.

In contrast to other types of graviera, Graviera Kretas is made either exclusively from sheep's milk or with the addition of goat's milk . Under no circumstances is cow's milk used. Along with kefalotiri , it is one of the most widely used types of hard cheese. Old and matured, it can also be rubbed well, for example over salads or pasta dishes.

The Graviera produced on the Ionian Islands comes very close to the Swiss Gruyère , which can be interpreted as an indication of Swiss origin and a later variation of the cheese.
