Greek Macedonians ( Greek Μακεδόνες Make Dones ), the Greek-speaking inhabitants of the country Macedonia and the region of Macedonia in northern Greece .

They are also called Macedonians or Macedonians , although these terms are misleading because they are also used in German for the Slavic Macedonians .

Due to the Hellenization of the ancient Macedonians , today's Greek Macedonians see themselves as their cultural heirs. With 2.5 million inhabitants, these make up around a quarter of the population of Greece. While the region saw a significant increase in the number of Pontic Greeks after the genocide of the Pontic Greeks and the catastrophe in Asia Minor , a significant number of Macedonians emigrated for economic reasons in the 19th and 20th centuries. Since then, there have been major expatriate churches in the United States , Canada, and Australia . The city of Melbourne has the largest expatriate church with 250,000 members.
