The Greek Place ( Ukrainian Грецька площа Hrezka ploschtscha , Russian Греческая площадь Gretscheskaja ploschtschad ) is one of the largest squares in the historic center of the Ukrainian city of Odessa .
The Greek court, in Soviet times it was called until 1994 by WS Martynowski ( Владимир Сергеевич Мартыновский ; 1906-1973) Martynowskogo Square ( площадь Мартыновского ) bears again today its original name due to the fact that here at the time of the Empress Catherine II . Greeks lived and existed a Greek bazaar.
In the square, which has the shape of an elongated rectangle, there are fountains and resting places. In its center stands the Majurowa House ( Будинок Маюрова Budynok Majurowa ) , also known as the Round House , with an oval floor plan. There are museums and a shopping center around it. For a long time the square was considered the center of the book trade and there is still a large book market on its edge. The square, now a pedestrian zone, was in the past a traffic junction that many tram lines crossed or started here.
Today the square is a regular venue for various events such as festivals, exhibitions and concerts.
