Pen box
The Griffelkasten , the Rhineland and pen box , in Saxony slate box called, many years served (up to the 1970s) as a vehicle for pens, fountain pen and pencils. The children kept their school tools in it.
The classic pen case was made of wood. A hinged lid was located above a compartment, mostly divided by strips or milled in wood, in which pens etc. were located. The lid was often decorated with colorful stickers with child-friendly motifs.
Variants of the pen boxes are wooden boxes with three or four levels that could be rotated via a central point. There were also pen boxes with a wooden lid inserted into grooves.
Later there were other variants that were ultimately also made of plastic, including rake beads inside the lid.
