Large mikvah

The large mikvah ( Mykwa Wielka in Polish ) is a former mikvah in Kraków 's Kazimierz district at 6 Szeroka Street .

history

In 1567 the mikveh was built. The basin was located underground at the level of the groundwater level. 40 stone steps led down there. In 1608 it was first referred to as the large mikveh.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the building was extensively rebuilt. The wooden walls with their decorations were replaced by stone walls. After 1939 the building was badly damaged. The mikveh basin was preserved.

In 1966 the Great Mikveh became a cultural monument of the Lesser Poland Voivodeship . Extensive restoration work took place from 1974 to 1976. In the 1990s it was returned to the Krakow Jewish Community. Today it houses a restaurant and a hotel.
