Great Synagogue (Babrujsk)
The Great Synagogue in Babrujsk , a Belarusian city in Mahiljouskaja Woblasz , was built in 1900/01.
Before 1941 the proportion of the Jewish population in Babruysk was between 25 and 30%. With over 30 synagogues , Bobrujsk was an important center of Jewish culture, so it was ironically popularly called the capital of Israel (Stalitsa Yisrael). The majority of the Jewish population was murdered by the German occupiers during the Holocaust . The Great Synagogue was devastated during this time.
The synagogue was built for the Orthodox Jewish community.
