Group performance

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The group performance describes the result of group work.

There are some special features when it comes to group performance:

  • If a task is additive, the group performance results from the sum of the individual tasks (e.g. snow shoveling).
  • If a task is conjunctive, the group performance depends on the weakest group member (e.g. mountain climbing).
  • If a task is disjunctive, the group performance depends on the strongest group member (e.g. problem solving).
  • If a task is discretionary, the group performance depends on the optimal use of the individual skills of the group members (e.g. joint assessment).
  • If the group performance is greater than the sum of the individual performances, there is a synergy effect .
  • If the group performance is less than the sum of the individual performances, there is - depending on the cause - social idleness or the Ringelmann effect .
