Giovanni Tonucci
Giovanni Tonucci (born December 4, 1941 in Fano , Province of Pesaro and Urbino , Italy ) is an Italian clergyman, former diplomat of the Holy See and was prelate of the Loreto Territorial Prelature from 2007 to 2017 .
Life
Tonucci was born in Fano in the diocese of Pesaro . After graduating from high school in his hometown, he entered the Pontifical Roman Seminary in Rome and studied Catholic theology and philosophy . He was ordained a priest on March 19, 1966 by Costanzo Micci . In 1968 he entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See . After training at the Pontifical Diplomatic Academy , he studied at the Pontifical Lateran University , where he received his doctorate in Catholic theology and canon law . From 1971 to 1989 Tonucci worked in Cameroon , Great Britain , Yugoslavia and the USA .
On October 21, 1989 he was appointed Titular Archbishop of Torcello and Apostolic Nuncio in Bolivia by Pope John Paul II . The episcopal ordination donated him Pope John Paul II himself on January 6, 1990. Co-consecrators were the Archbishops of the Curia Giovanni Battista Re and Miroslaw Marusyn .
In 1996 he became nuncio in Kenya . Tonucci also worked in the Vatican , including in the State Secretariat and as a permanent observer for UNEP and UN-HABITAT . In 2004 he became nuncio for the Scandinavian countries Sweden , Denmark , Finland , Iceland and Norway .
Pope Benedict XVI appointed Tonucci on October 18, 2007 as prelate of the territorial prelature Loreto and papal envoy for the sanctuary of Loreto. He took up this office on December 1 of the same year. On March 8, 2014, Pope Francis also appointed him papal envoy for the Basilica of St. Anthony in Padua. On March 20, 2017, the Pope accepted his resignation because of his age and appointed Fabio Dal Cin , from Vittorio Veneto , as his successor two months later .
family
His brother, Don Paolo Maria Tonucci, was a missionary in Brazil from 1965 to 1994 and is committed to the rights of the poor. The Brazilian military dictatorship declared him an "undesirable person" and revoked his citizenship .
