Gruta de las Canicas
Gruta de las Canicas is a 529 meter long and 17 meter deep cave system in southeast Mexico . Especially the cave pearls that occur here make the cave something special. Cave pearls are spherical limestone concretions ( sinter ) that can arise in the oversaturated cave water. As oolites , they have a spherical structure.
The creation of cave pearls requires such extraordinary conditions that they are very rare. In this cave, however, they cover long stretches of the ground, so that their number is estimated at over 200 million. This makes this cave by far the largest occurrence of cave pearls in the world.
The cave has been known to the locals for a long time, but experts have only recently explored it. The owner endeavors to develop the cave for tourism, but this has so far failed due to a lack of finances.
