Guacanagari

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Guacanagari († 1494 ) was one of the five indigenous kings of Hispaniola . He received Christopher Columbus in 1492 after his ship, the Santa Maria , ran aground off the island on Christmas Day 1492.

When Columbus left the island, neighboring caciques attacked the Spanish settlement of La Navidad . The Spaniards were murdered and La Navidad and the city were burned by King Guacanagari.

Guacanagari refused to cooperate with the other caciques trying to drive the Spaniards off the island. He fled to the mountainous hinterland of Hispaniola, where he died in 1494.
