Company history

The price comparison guenstiger.de was founded in 1999 by Philipp Hartmann and Torsten Schnoor. In 2003 Aske Magdalinski joined as chief developer. In the same year, the comparison portal Preissuchmaschine.de was published . In June 2011 the company was taken over by the American internet company NexTag Inc. The main location of the international price comparison portal is the Silicon Valley in San Mateo , California . Philipp Hartmann, Torsten Schnoor and Aske Magdalinski left guenstiger.de GmbH in the fourth quarter of 2011. Ulrich Weber (until 2013), Harald Schiffauer and various employees of the American parent company Nextag (now WizeCommerce Inc.) became the new managing directors. In the course of the integration into the American group Nextag and the associated synergy effects, 30 of the approximately 80 jobs were cut in 2013.

In 2014 the company released the guenstiger.de app for iOS in a fundamentally revised design, followed by the Android app in 2015. In the same year Nextag Inc. was taken over into the portfolio of the American investment firm Regent Equity Partners. Michael A. Reinstein became the second managing director alongside Harald Schiffauer. In addition, the new design of the guenstiger.de homepage was rolled out in 2015. The mobile version of guenstiger.de was published in 2016 in a new and optimized design.

In spring 2017, Harald Schiffauer became sole managing director. In the same year, Google Shopping Ads for price search engines were launched for the first time. In 2018 guenstiger.de GmbH acquired the e-commerce specialist Wize Commerce India as a subsidiary. With effect from January 21, 2019, New Media Beteiligungs GmbH acquired 100% of the shares in guenstiger.de GmbH.

Structure and principle of operation

The portal gives consumers an overview of all the information they need to make a purchase decision for a product. After entering the desired item, users will find a list of online retailers who offer the product. The lowest price appears at the top. In addition, product information, user opinions, test reports and dealer ratings are displayed. The platform's portfolio ranges from consumer electronics to household and leisure products to clothing and sports.

Market position and ranking

In 2011, the consumer portal tested.de examined the ten largest price comparison sites. guenstiger.de was awarded a test grade of 1.9 for its favorable prices, a clear search and correct information, as well as extras such as price alarms, price development graphics, good selection and sorting functions. This put guenstiger.de in third place, just behind billiger.de (grade 1.8) and idealo.de (grade 1.7).

In May 2015 the number of users of the website was around 5 million. By May 2017, this value had more than halved to 2.2 million. According to Alexa, guenstiger.de ranks 471 of all German domains in October 2015. The competitors Idealo.de, billiger.de and geizhals.de occupy places 30, 169 and 303. In June 2017 guenstiger.de fell to place 1128 in the Alexa ranking. The competitors Idealo.de, billiger.de and geizhals.de occupy positions 66, 541 and 354.

In November 2015, the German Society for Consumer Studies (DtGV) awarded the test rating 1.7 (good) in cooperation with N24 guenstiger.de. The test winner was billiger.de, followed by idealo.de and geizhals.de.
