Gunnar (Edda)

Gunnar , a protagonist of several Eddic songs , is a son of Grimhild and Giuku , his siblings are Gudrun and Högni , his stepbrother is Gutthorm . In the German-speaking world, for example in the Nibelungenlied , the character is called Gunther , his historical role model is Gundahar .

He was loved by Oddrun , a sister of Atli . However, he married Brynhild , whom he won with Sigurd's help.

Ultimately, this led to Sigurd's death, whereupon Brynhild also committed suicide. (see Sigurdharkvidha Fafnisbana thridhja ) After her death, Gunnar Glaumwör marries .

The old atlilied tells how the guilds accepted a treacherous invitation to Atlis to his court. Here Atli asked for Sigurd's hoard (gold treasure) to be handed over, but the guests refused, whereupon a bitter fight ensued, in which all Giukungen except Gunnar were killed. After he still refused to reveal the hiding place of the treasure that he and Högni had sunk in the Rhine, he was put in a tower full of vipers, where he breathed his life out.
