Guoliang tunnel

The Guoliang Tunnel is erected in the 1970s tunnel , which the in the Chinese province of Henan situated village Guoliang ( 郭亮村 , Guoliang Cun links) on the transport route to the outside world. The tunnel is a tourist attraction and is counted among the “ten most dangerous streets in the world” by the German tabloid Express .

history

In order to connect the village of Guoliang, located high up in the Taihang Mountains , to the outside world, a tunnel was created in the mountains that is 1.2 kilometers long, five meters high and four meters wide. Construction began in 1972 and spanned a period of five years. The tunnel was opened on May 1, 1977.

Before the tunnel was built, a small and arduous trail was the only connection between the village, which is around 1,800 meters high, and the outside world. The construction was carried out by 13 people who were only equipped with simple tools and received no support from the Chinese government. They built the tunnel and the road to move people and goods. Although many deaths have been reported in the tunnel, there are no official statistics. The first deaths occurred during the construction work.
