Gustav Nachtigal Medal

The Gustav Nachtigal Medal was awarded from 1896 to the 1990s by the Society for Geography , which also donated it. It was awarded for services in the field of geography and voyages of discovery.

Its namesake Gustav Nachtigal was president of the Geography Society in Berlin and died in 1885 on the journey home from Africa on board the cruiser Möwe .

The Gustav Nachtigal Medal was awarded in gold or - from 1898 onwards - silver.

Appearance

The medal was 51 mm in diameter. The front shows a half-left portrait of Gustav Nachtigal , the back shows an eagle next to the German trade flag.
