Saint Gwenhael († around 550 in Brittany ) was a monk and missionary . There are numerous spelling variants of his name, including Guénaël, Gwenael, Guénault, Guennal and Guinal. His feast day is November 3rd. Numerous churches and chapels are dedicated to him in Brittany.

Life

The biography of St. Gwenhael originated in the 9th century. Legend has it that Saint Guénolé met eleven-year-old Gwenhael in the year 489 on the streets of Quimper and was very impressed by his skills. Guénolé convinced the boy's parents to raise him in Landévennec Abbey . Gwenhael became a monk and finally in 532 abbot of the monastery, succeeding Guénolés. Gwenhael is said to have been active not only as a missionary in Brittany, but also in England and Ireland. In addition to the houses of worship consecrated to him, numerous field names in Brittany also indicate the veneration and popularity of this saint.
